Lee Matthews, Tony Wood and Josh Fergeus - By Pete Dillon
Six years ago, prevented from adopting a child, or accessing IVF facilities or commercial surrogacy in Australia, Tony Wood and Lee Matthews embarked on an international surrogacy arrangement that would take them to Iowa, America, for the birth of their son. This resulted in the film, Man Made: Two Men and Baby. Five years on, Lee and Tony have a second child, Lucy who is 2 years old. A second film Two Men and Two Babies airs on 29th January on SBS TV.
Josh Fergeus is 22 years old today. He was accredited as a foster carer 3 ½ years ago. "Tim’s daughters were conceived via self insemination
at home, and spend part of each month with Tim and his male partner,
who live very close to the girls’ mothers. Tim shares the school
runs, and phones and emails his children throughout the week.
“Nine years on, it’s been a most successful and satisfying
arrangement,” says Tim. “Each couple are always welcome in the
other’s home, and we sometimes go on holidays together with the
kids. We don’t let our egos get in the way or argue about rights,
because the people with the rights are the children.”

New civil union laws allowing same sex couples to be ‘officially recognised’ are expected to become law in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) very soon. So, it seems, the tide may be turning on state recognition of same sex relationships. Or is it? Resistance to civil unions and gay marriage - most notably from the Federal Government - threatens to overturn the new legislation before it gets on its feet. These days, a same-sex couple walking hand-in-hand down the street barely raises an eyebrow. But it’s a different story if that couple is walking down the aisle together. Insight looks at why some gay people want to formalise their relationship - is it the recognition and public acceptance of their partnership that matters? Or is it because of hurdles that arise when everyday forms and documents simply don’t recognise you as a family - things like the Medicare Safety Net, taxation benefits and superannuation death benefits. Is marriage a tradition that should be exclusively for a man and woman? Or should it keep in step with social change? Even politicians from the same party can’t agree. And what happens when children are involved? Are kids with two mums or two dads worse off than those who grow up in more traditional home settings? Should the laws be changed so that the non-biological parent in a same-sex relationship can be legally identified as an equal parent? Insight brings together politicians who are at loggerheads on the issue, representatives of religious groups, and differing voices from the heterosexual and gay and lesbian community.
Gay "husbands" to test their marriage in court - by Farah Farouque. In a legal first, two Melbourne gay men who married in Canada are planning to apply to the Australian courts to have their union recognised at home. Jason McCheyne and Adrian Tuazon, both Australian citizens, flew to Canada last month and exchanged wedding rings and vows in a civil ceremony at Toronto's city hall. Click
