Welcome to Gay Dads New South Wales
In the
beginning…
In April 2005 Gay Dads NSW was started as a yahoo group online when
Lee and Tony (from Melbourne) came to Sydney to help organise a
seminar on surrogacy, in conjunction with a US-based surrogacy
agency. The group developed as a result of the seminar as a vehicle
for exchange of information and experiences and as a means of
offering advice and support to potential fathers.
At the same time a group of co-parenting dads began to meet. Each
time the group met it drew a greater audience. It seemed that gay
dads enjoyed sharing their experiences of fatherhood with others.
Furthermore, considerable interest was shown by a large number of
gay men who were contemplating becoming a co-parent but who lacked
information or useful resources.
In time it made sense that the online yahoo group and co-parenting
dads group should become one on account of their similar aims.
At Mardi Gras Fair Day 2006 we joined forces with another Gay Dads
Group – GDAY – and organized a Gay Dads NSW picnic. We obtained over
30 names of men wishing to join the group and from there we haven’t
looked back.
Our
mission…
- For
those considering parenthood, we aim to provide you with specific
information resources, advice and support
- For
those who already have children, we’re here to facilitate social
interaction, provide information resources, support and promote
public understanding
- For
the children of gay parents, we aim to provide opportunities, such
as picnics, to meet, play and build friendships and peer support
with other children in similar family environments
Currently…
The group now has over 150 dads and intending dads on a group email
list and as members of an online discussion group both statewide and
nationally. Thus far in 2006 we have had several group dinners, held
3 information nights and celebrated Father’s Day with a picnic for
all dads and children.
We continue to build strong links with other community groups such
as the Rights Lobby, the GLCS and Rainbow Babies and Kids in the
hope of promoting our group, sharing knowledge which we can pass on
to gay dads and forging valuable links.
The
future…
We hope we can continue to offer more services and organise more
social activities for gay dads and their children. For example,
age-based social activities, focus group meetings/dinners for
specific groups such as surrogacy dads or fostering dads,
involvement in the Mardi Gras Parade and involvement in lobbying for
law reform.
With your help and support we can change the world.
